Dear GVL Community Members and Friends,

We are so excited to tell you that the GVL Disaster Recovery Foundation in cooperation with R. W. Roberts Construction has secured the landmark property where Fox Lumber once stood to build a “state of the art” visitor/community center.  This center will be dedicated to disaster preparedness and environmental education.  Specifically, the Center for Disaster Preparedness and Environmental Education will feature:

  1. Community meeting/lecture room equipped with advanced technology for computer presentations and video conferencing.  Here we will hold Town Hall meetings, classes, and the performing arts, i.e. local talent and touring groups.
  2. Art gallery where local artists can display their art as well as demonstrate their talents.
  3. Special events room equipped with kitchen, food storage, and dining area.  This room will be the gathering place in the event of a disaster but also used for recognitions, celebrations, and the “coming together of the GVL community” for fun events.
  4. Communications center where we hope to involve all first responders in helping us reach out should we become isolated due to a disaster or in times of general day-to-day emergencies i.e. first aid center, ham radio, GPS systems.
  5. Visitor Center where our guests will sign in so that we can create a database to aid families in locating missing loved ones after a disaster.  Visitors may check out a GPS system dedicated to the GVL terrain for hiking and biking.  Maps of trails, camping areas, cabin rentals, and other local attractions on the mountain will be available as well as a safe mountain practices video to view.
  6. Green living technology (we would be the “model”) using solar and alternative energy sources.

Will you join us in this adventure by responding to the Board members listed below with an enthusiastic “Yes, we can!” because “Yes, we should!” for the future of GVL.  We want you to be involved in the planning and we need your thoughts, ideas, and expertise.
